Iran conflict expands toward a second major maritime chokepoint

The Middle East’s maritime security crisis has widened after Yemen’s Iran-aligned Houthi movement said it attacked two Saudi oil tankers in the Red Sea.

The attacks have raised fears that disruption could spread from the Strait of Hormuz to the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, another critical route for global energy and commercial shipping.

International oil prices rose sharply following reports of the attacks, with Brent crude moving above $100 per barrel.

Bab el-Mandeb gains strategic importance

The Bab el-Mandeb Strait connects the Red Sea with the Gulf of Aden and serves as an essential route for vessels moving between Asia and Europe through the Suez Canal.

Disruption at Bab el-Mandeb would create additional difficulties for global shipping companies already dealing with instability around the Strait of Hormuz.

Ships avoiding both routes could be forced to travel around the southern coast of Africa, significantly increasing transportation time and costs.

Houthis increase pressure on Saudi Arabia

The Houthis have threatened to restrict Saudi-linked shipping in response to Saudi involvement in Yemen.

The confrontation could reopen a major front between Saudi Arabia and the Houthis after several years of efforts to reduce direct hostilities.

For Riyadh, renewed Houthi attacks create a difficult strategic problem.

Saudi Arabia wants to protect its energy exports and Red Sea infrastructure while avoiding a return to a prolonged military campaign in Yemen.

Risk of wider confrontation

The United States has warned that further attacks on commercial shipping could trigger additional military action against the Houthis and Iran.

At the same time, U.S. and Iranian forces remain engaged in conflict around the Gulf.

The possibility of simultaneous disruption around Hormuz and Bab el-Mandeb would significantly increase the economic consequences of the regional war.

The latest attacks therefore mark more than another episode in Yemen’s long-running conflict.

They show how Yemen and the Red Sea are increasingly becoming part of the wider confrontation involving Iran, the Gulf states and the United States.
